[Lotus Notes Sucks: Example 76]
Least Favorite Favorites
This suxism comes from Gary H.
Problem
I'm aware that Notes offers some kind of bookmarking feature, but since it's rather opaque I tend not to use it. One of the factors that makes it mystifying is the number of different Favorites folders. The image below is a composite showing the tooltips for the Favorites folders:
Now, Microsoft Internet Explorer users are used to talking about Favorites, and Netscape/Firefox users know that these are really Bookmarks. So both sets of users are likely to be confused when they start Lotus Notes to find they have five folders, apart from the History folder, for recording frequently used links.
Looking at the above list, we have the catch-all Favorite Bookmarks, then Databases, presumably for bookmarks of Lotus Notes databases, then the vaguely named More Bookmarks (more than what?), then Internet Explorer Links (normally called, erm..., Favorites), followed inexplicably by...Favorites. All of which leaves me wondering where the hell the link to the tech support database I bookmarked last week is actually stored.
User Interface Guideline Violations
- Interface does not follow established conventions.
- Application does many unrelated tasks, particularly that have nothing to do with email.
- Forcing the user to deal with stupidity.
Conclusion
Lotus Notes sucks.
