[Lotus Notes Sucks: Example 9]
Attaching a File to a Mail Message
Problem
If I try to attach a document by clicking the Attach icon (paper clip):
while the To: box has the focus (the cursor is in the To: box), I see this dialog box:
Analysis
I am sure there is some technical reason for this, but I should be able to attach a document no matter where the text cursor is.
Update
"Can't execute the specified command" is a very popular Lotus Notes error message. For example, try this:
- Right-click a folder, such as Rules.
- Click Cut.
Notice that the "Can't execute the specified command" error message appears. Note that Edit is disabled, but Cut isn't—even though both commands don't apply to the current context.
Update for Version 6.5.2
The error message is prevented from displaying because the icon is dimmed. This also sucks, since the position of the text cursor has nothing to do with attaching a file. Don't bother to send me messages about the technical reasons for this behavior. It doesn't matter. From the user's point of view, it doesn't matter. The user should not have to move the text cursor to attach a file.
User Interface Guideline Violations
Interrupting the user's work flow with a dialog box that should never have a reason to appear.Giving the user an incomplete error message.- Forcing the user to do more work than necessary.
- Forcing the user to deal with stupidity.
Conclusion
Lotus Notes sucks.
