[Lotus Notes Sucks: Example 6]
The Property Sheet
Problem
Here is the properties sheet for my Lotus Notes "database":
Analysis
Where do I start?
- First, how about referring to the "database" as a mailbox? That's the terminology used by all other email applications.
- Clicking Compact does nothing. Actually, it does—but the interface doesn't give you any hint that it does. You have to quit Lotus Notes for the "compact your database" action to begin. Anyhow, tasks such as compacting a database is a job the system administrators should be doing, not end users.
- Clicking User Detail... does nothing.
- There's the useless information on the properties sheet, such as Replica ID and ODS version. What does ODS mean?
- Look at the goofy icons on the properties sheet's tabs. That's a whole example onto itself.
User Interface Guideline Violations
- User is given useless information.
- Interface does not follow established conventions because it allows the user to click on a command that isn't valid in the current context. After the first time I click Compact, the button should be made unavailable. But then again, this button should not be here in the first place.
- Interface does not use standard terminology.
- Forcing the user to deal with stupidity.
Conclusion
Lotus Notes sucks.
